Coil 03:07
In the deep green of your ancient mind where the ivy and the myrtle wind, coiled there in their undergrowth, the story of your very soul. Was giv’n to you before you breathed. Encircles ‘round in time of need. Writhe as you might in childlike twists, you’ll always sense its forehead kiss. No matter where you go, no matter what you seek, it will coil around your every choice and every need. No matter what you want, no matter what else is hooking you. Will you slither inside its refuge to hear its truth? It leaves you breadcrumbs in your dreams, through every free fall, every scream. Each guardrail goes up on dispatch to keep you on your untread path. A siren song sung in reverse, where to your death you are not cursed. It breathes you full of songs of hope, of what it means to carry its load. Try in vain to turn away; that’s forgetting how it seals your fate. You tied yourself up to its plot before you gave this life a shot. You can stand-it-off all of your life and boil its molten kettle of strife. Or you could lean into its kiss. Deliver your soul its very wish.

Growndown 03:51
Don’t fly away, Serenity. Come on down. You’ve got your whole life to live, honey, down in this muddy ground. If you’re waiting for the day you won’t have to grow down so, you might as well try to fly. You fell here to do the work of growin’ down your star. Don’t let your life go by. You’ve got to plant yourself with both your tiny hands and set your tender roots to grow. For you’ve got to do the work of clipping your tiny wings. Don’t let your fear say so. Serenity’s the name was kissed into each feet; a chance at your hard-won peace. Go do the awful work of breaking your own heart, you’ll see what us growndowns see.

Balance 04:15
You say you got your life so fly, predictable. You know just where you want to go. You like to live it a certain way and you write your script out at the break of each day. But what happens when you find you know that you’re living out the wrong story for your soul? Can you seek your way to the other side? Will you rectify the balance, the balance of your life? There’s a comfort in each pole that pulls you in. You follow rules and creeds that catalogue your sins. But you lose your faith inside its rigidity—- ‘cause a creed leaves out what is also decreed. In your desperation for living your righteous way, you’ll cut yourself off from the Love in your hate. You enjoyed your first taste of standing your wholly ground. Tired of being lost, you gone found your found. You’ve got one foot in each current of the Earth a circuit lightning strong that fuels your worth. No longer whipping back and forth in wild escape, you’re saddle-broken now into your fate. When you swing yourself out far to one side, You’ll bounce right to its reverse truth. And you’ll fumble, fall, scar, scratch your two-face, wondering is this you, you too? So you crawl yourself back to their midpoint, learn to walk in both their shoes. You will find the answer’s been here all the time between the two....

Braveheart 08:17
Let go your fear, the one that’s coiled you right here in chains of old that tighten ‘round your soul. Heart pressed for hurt, quake and tremor on high alert. Let go. Let go your fear, the one that’s coiled you right here that binds your arms from reaching into your dark. You need what’s in there, once you relinquish your fear. Let go. Let go your fear, the one that’s coiled you right here. No fear in Love. Yes, that’s what you need the most more of. Release its grasp let it fall down just like that. Let go. You gotta Braveheart. Let loose your Braveheart. Lead with your Braveheart Did you ever hear tell of the story where you get to know how it gonna go? Maybe that is why you want your story in the passive tone? for the victim role? Because lyin’ in that beat down story, how you gonna go? They won’t let you go.So you stay perched in front of your story. Hedging your breath. Crossed arms in NO. You’ve been cataloguing all your wild fears. What you won’t do. Where you won’t go. As you stone up in fright in your fear spike, checklisting these things gotta happen like so. Can you gaze into that feathered daybreak, see your table set in shades of Hope? Plant yourself there to greet your day. Ain’t no way to pray with a fear-drunk soul. You know of the girl in her black dress that walks away and leaves you cold. She’s too frightened to stay with what she can see, it’s got her in a world’s end choke hold. When it’s toying with her inside your scene deep down inside your better mind does know. That you take your daily bread in your heartache. Your braveheart knows where to go.

Run 03:14
When you find yourself in the middle of that place you can no longer be, and your torn asunder left and back and right about how all of this came to be. You go on pick up the one foot you just put down, land it front of the one to come,‘cause to turn around now don’t make no sense, in your heart you know you betta run. You betta run Ain’t no buddies out here to keep your pace, it’s just you and your righteous mind and how you’ve gone and made it up to do the thing that you’ve been scaredy cattin’ all this time. No longer being chased by what you fear, instead you’re running out toward what you see. You pick one foot up and drop it down toward the place that’s inside your dream. Though you’re lovin’ every minute that holds you here inside this thing you cannot resist. No choices buzzin’ around your swarmin’ need, you can pick from only this or this. You find you’re 5 miles back, or 5 years along, or 500 miles from your home. Gird up your girl muscle. Brace your heart. Get on going where you need to go.

The Greatest 04:13
All I know is what I saw. The plot points scraped from the television screen. Imagined from the basement dark, I mimicked each gesture, each time she breathed. Before the days of issuing requests, a playlist to call all my own, I’d crash-a-run to her video’s side in hopes that she’d sing me back home. ...and the song goes on, it’s beautiful.... Will you walk inside her song? Or walk inside her shoes? You always need somebody to love you like you do. We beheld as her body gave it light. We shivered each upward key change. Yet, we never saw, how she’d split herself in two, her gaze fractured into estranged. I still believe that children are our future. The greatest love is real. How to harmonize the chasm between her life and what she helped me to feel? Where should we begin to tell the tale of how the greatest love’s up to you? Not easy to achieve, yet it’s freely given. The choice is still ours to refuse. If you’re gonna believe with all your heart that you’re damaged beyond repair then your life too will be a testimony of how we refuse what’s already there.

Global Roam 03:39
Walking beside you in your wearied gaze; heat waves up in circles through the middle space. No one can tell you when your feet will cease. Anchored to where you know you’re born to be. Each place that you find yourself traveling through, returns a fragment of what you’re meant to do. Treasure each remnant as a shard of jeweled stone. You need to wander your own way home, this global roam. Can you be this refugee? Be worn out, heatstroked and hungry? Will you see you’re not alone? You need to wander your own way home, this global roam. No matter where you go, you locate what you need. Your without home, not homeless, with callused, leathered feet. You’re caught up in circles, spinning ‘round in rhyme. Though you can’t see what’s up ahead, it’s been there all the time. An alien in dry land, you migrate in this haze. Learning language and losing words. You accustom to this place. Be welcomed by who you fear. You’ll hold each other whole. Go wander your own way home, this global roam. Will you see beyond a doubt? No escaping from here. What’s in is out. Oh, this searching’s the only way to know, You need to wander your own way home, this global roam.

Zero to One 05:07
This life cannot help but be a reflection of your self. Born like no one else to be, it’s you or no one else. You’re giv’n but this only life. Will you bear its fierce embrace? Let its warmth rest upon your neck. Hug you writhe into your place? Follow your North Star, that was born with you. Once in a lifetime will you live your truth. Live your story loud, it’s only yours right now. In a wildest dream was what’s you conceived. If you refuse your single chance to step into your spot of light, then you’ll wither in shadows and risk betraying your life. Which heart will you gird up now? Which dying will you do? ‘Cause your fear cannot follow where your story is leading you to. Lay down your questions here. Slip and slide them all downstream. Pack up your reluctances. Allow fate to its sealing. Stop mining for life to rhyme. Delight in its singling. What was born on the night you breathed was what was meant to be.

Ready 05:12
You know I’m ready. Come what may. No more excusin.’ I’ll take my fate. Layin’ down refusin’ s’the only way. You know I’m ready to pluck my day. You know I’m ready, I’m willing, and able. I’m owning all my cards on the table. No more twistin.’ No more resistin.’ No more skirtin’, shirkin’, s’time to get to workin.’ I’m too tired to start again. I’m too wired to not begin. You know I’m ready. Come what may. Lacing up my shoes to stand real brave. Raisin’ my head up, not bow ‘n cave. You know I’m ready to pluck my day. You know I’m ready, I’m willing, and able. I’m owning all my cards on the table. No more cheatin.’ No more repeatin.’ No more accusin’, cruisin’, or losin’ my own way. I’m too close now to turn away but I got to pick up my pace. You know I’m ready. Come what may. You know I’m ready to pluck my day. You know I’m ready, I’m willing, and able. I’m owning all my cards on the table. No more lyin.’ No more whinin.’ No more bluffin’, shufflin’, or too muchin.’ I’m too old to start again. I’m too young to know the way. I’m leading with my heart so it can seize its day.

Birthday 05:45
This birthday becomes you so treat it like brand new. Give it your first born cry. Fist HIGH! You’ll know pain and heartache with ½ the breath you take. Don’t make that the song of your life. You’ll bargain and disavow, wheedlin’ those ways out. Remember your first born cry. We’ll see you through each breath. We’ve got you with each step. Go live out your story right.

Eowyn Rising 07:17

about

What to make of the dissonance between the belief that we choose our lives and that physicists tell us free will is an illusion?

We decided to wrestle that out with the liberating physical laws of rock and roll.

Or did we? Maybe this album was always meant to be.

about

Mudsong Bemidji, Minnesota

Mudsong crafts stories that give voice to our breaking human hearts. Thomas King said, “The truth about stories is that’s all we are."  The truth about Mudsong is songstories are all we are. Original stories. Soulful songs. Crafted from the sloppy mess of life? That's what we do. Our evenings open on the hearthfire of the bass guitar, shimmy through the saxophone, and linger over heart and soul. ... more
